Hold On, it's about to get CRAZY over here!

We are officially under contract for 10 Acres! OMG! NOW WHAT??? It's one thing to dream about, it's another to start from a blank slate and shape it into the dream that we have wanted. Keeping in mind that this is a second property, not our main home and we need to be mindful of cost as we approach retirement, although that may have just been pushed out a bit! Our long term vision is a barndominium shop for Rob, storage for his toys, a creative workshop space for me and eventually finishing out living quarters to AirBNB. Here's the catch...we have no idea what we are doing! Seriously!

Everyone wants to get out of the city and work from home, enjoying the quiet country lifestyle. We already did that five years ago, but we want more. We are in a gated lakeside resort with golf course and wonderful community of friends. We love it. But, I want a small flower farm, a chicken coop, bees, babydoll sheep and a pony for my future grandchild! I want to really get in the dirt and make something happen!

I have admired and envied all the flower farms and vegetable gardens from afar, but can I really do that? I am no master gardener. I don't have a hoop house or greenhouse out there. Sure, I am tending to 7 large containers and growing from seed in my greenhouse at home, but is that really farming? I go to garden school, I read so many books, but where do I begin with an open field? To till, or not to till, soil amendments, water source....where to begin? Rabbits, deer, drought, weeding...and for what? Am I going to sell these flowers? Will I have enough to source locally? Or just give them away and use in my creative workshops? Creative workshops, what are those? How long until the barn goes up? Will I have enough space to have creative workshops? And who would want to come? Would they be local? How far would they drive? Where would they stay when they came if the Barndominium is not finished out yet? Can I even afford any of this? Do I want to do this when I am 60? I am 52 now...is this a sustainable idea? I have a full time job that I love and is considerable income and a 40 hour a week commitment. When do I want to retire? When can I retire? What am I thinking? By the time I get this all done will I want to still do this? Will I be burned out? This Texas heat is brutal...does this gardening thing really sound like a great idea?

I have asked God to send me a sign if we are supposed to graciously back out of this crazy idea. But nope, we have a pond digger, a barn builder and a beekeeping consultant coming this week. Hold on, it's about to get crazy over here! Join us on this adventure!
